Owner Listed Aussies
View the dogs below. Click on their pictures to see a larger image. The links above will take you through our different categories of listings: foster, shelter, owner-listed and mixes. If you would like to meet Foster or Owner Listed dogs with the hope of finding a new family member, please fill out an adoption application and we will contact you. Please do not call to ask about a dog without first filling out an adoption application. Owner listed dogs have met the written evaluation standards required by NCAR. Owner listed dogs have not been temperament tested by NorCal Aussie Rescue volunteers unless stated otherwise. Dogs posted that are fostered by other rescue organizations such as STAAR, MILO or ARPH are likely to have been temperament tested by a representative from that organization. We recommend that you inquire with the contact.

Rexie
Rexie smiling
Meet Rexie, a bright, alert Aussie cross who comes to us from the Sonoma County shelter. Rexie is a recently neutered yearling stray who is house-trained, knows some commands, plays ball and gets along pretty well in a new pack of mostly youngish males. He crated-up well for his first night and traveled well by car to the dog park today. He was graded "adoptable" directly by the shelter, but did not show well because he disliked meeting people in a kennel setting. He tended to stay toward the back of his enclosure and not engage with potential adopters, so shelter staff thought he'd show more appealingly with us. With his rakish, rock-star "face-paint" and friendly demeanor, we agree! Rexie is being fostered by Tom in Danville .

Merle
Merle is a handsome 4 y.o. neutered red merle Aussie. On the small side (30 #), he loves to play, play, play, has lots of energy and fetches like crazy. He is a loyal, loveable boy with his family, including toddlers, although NCAR would not recommend that he be placed in a home with young children. Merle grew up Truckee where he and many other dogs are allowed to roam free. Not a good situation for any dog, much less an Aussie. As a result, he has learned to charge at other dogs and strangers when, in truth, he is under-socialized and somewhat fearful. His owner now has him under control and is working on desensitizing Merle to dogs and strangers. He is responding well but needs more work to break him of a very bad habit. With structure and firm boundaries Merle will become a great companion and a fun dog to own.

Cocoa
Cocoa is a lovely 10 year old Aussie whose owner died. Cocoa loves plush toys, raw hide, frisbee and a ball. She's lived with 3 cats, but doesn't like other dogs very much and should live as an only dog. She also is fearful and snappy around toddlers. She is lovely to walk or jog with, and she loves playing fetch. She's extremely loving and affectionate with her family members. Her owners acquired her from their mother who passed away and for whom she was a great companion. They've known Cocoa all her life. She was rescued as a pup from a box left on top of a garbage can and she's been part of their family ever since. Here's a quote from her family: "We've lived with Cocoa for six years now solely because we never had the heart to give her to just anyone or give her up to the shelter in fears they may put her to sleep due to her nature. She would make a wonderful companion to someone out there, I just know it. She doesn't really fit in with our family and young children, nor our lifestyle, but we do love her and care what happens to her. I'd love to find her a more suitable home to live out the rest of her years. We're looking for an adult home for Cocoa where she'll be the only dog and soak up all the affection she deserves. Cocoa is in Alameda.

Captain Jake
Captain Jake is an 8 yr young, neutered male, black tri-colored purebred Australian Shepherd. This guy is one huge teddy bear. Unfortunately, he has spent most of his recent life in a chain link dog kennel, which explains his intense desire for attention and affection. Jake has been happy to meet new female dogs, but since he has recently been neutered and has not been around other male dogs, it is unclear as to how he will be with them. However, he is a wiggly, bubbly and happy dog. He is curious about cats, tho not intense with them. He is unsure of livestock, tho shows no real prey drive nor herding instinct. Jake is currently being crated inside at night and is okay. His recall is fair to good and with some work, should be fine. Jake seems to like kids and is friendly with strangers. He may do best with a second dog in his future home, as he seems worried when he is alone, unless he is soaking up hugs and kisses from his human. By the way, Jake is a big fan of kisses, mostly when he is giving them! Jake and Rosee are both diamonds in the rough, but their huge desire for love will help speed the polishing process.

Maggie and Freedom

Maggie

Maggie is a purebred Border Collie. She’s bright as all get up! She’s 8 years old and you would think she was under 2. She LIVES for the Frisbee…and wants to be active/pet/cuddled 24/7. She is a love pig and loves to eat. She loves everyone and everything. She’s fine with kids and cats. She is more the “agility/search and rescue” type of breeding vs. the herding type. I did agility with her a year ago and she took to it amazingly (the teacher told me to keep up with HER). However, with that and with Frisbee sessions she pushes herself and, like any middle-aged human weekend warrior, she gets a bit sore and a bit slower to get up afterwards. She is on fish oils and glucosamine and condroitin.
She is shy of being bathed and does NOT like being blown dry. She wants to be stimulated and aims to please. I have been home fulltime since I rescued her (as a student) and, as such, she has had almost constant company. Someone who stays home or is retired would probably be ideal for her. Note: IF you are concentrating on something, like working on the computer or watching TV, she very cutely will either nudge her head into your lap or under your arm, or take a ball, chew toy, squeaky toy (the noisier the better) and put it on your lap, let it roll off, put it in your lap, let it roll off until you either play with her or give her attention. She wants to be with you at all times. She loves car rides. She loves Freedom (the other border collie) and all other non-aggressive dogs.
She was with the lady/backyard breeder until she was 5 years old when she was rescued. The lady had her arms full with triplets and couldn’t give Maggie much attention; i.e. Maggie was pretty much relegated to the garage. Garages still make her nervous and she gets out of them as soon as possible.

Freedom was Maggie’s breeding partner (backyard breeder) for the first two years of their lives (they are both 8 years old). At 2 years old he was relegated to a goat farmer in El Dorado County and became isolated at that time. He was brought out of a coverless, cyclone pen only to herd the goats or mount a bitch. As a result of this treatment he is petrified of loud noises (probably due to exposure to lightening) and fireworks. Loud noises petrify him…even if they are way far off and he’ll look agitated and jump on your lap for comfort. Because he comes from strong herding stock (supposedly direct from Scotland one or two generations ago), and his isolation during formative years in El Dorado, he is less socialized than Maggie and would do well in a home that is active but aware of the idiosyncracies of this breed. He would not do well with small children as they typically move quickly and he will herd them. He is an excellent house and yard protection dog and can be intimidating with his size (55-60 pounds). He loves cats and will do the “border collie eye” for awhile and follow cats around, but warms quickly, wags his tail, and follows them around the house but never hurts them. They are in Palm Springs.

Rufuss
My name is Rufuss and I am looking for a new home as my mommy had to move to Los Angeles and she could not take me with her. I am currently living at my grandmas house but she is never home and her backyard is much to small for me. I am a 3 1/2 year old mix breed. I love the water and playing Frisbee. I would love a home with a big back yard but most importantly I just want to be loved. I have a lot of energy but I am a good boy. I know the basic commands and am completely house broken. I bark when strangers come to the house or near our car and am a good watch dog! Rufuss is in Sacramento.

Jasper
Jasper is a 3-4 year old Aussie mix. He's high energy and city: Magalia He lives in Magalia with a SPCA-certified trainer. He's come a long way since he was adopted from the Paradise Shelter almost 2 years ago. He knows Sit, down, go to crate, no bark, leave it, do business, and Off. He has access to the house and yard through a doggie door. He does bark at things on the other side of the fence.....he is easily stimulated.

The only reason he needs to find a new home is that he is cat aggressive...a behavior that isn't improving. Jasper can live with easy-going dogs who don't care that he likes to steal toys! He loves to get a chewie and go in his crate and he loves his big dog pillow. He loves car rides and walks. Jasper is in Magalia. Ham MILO ID 6135
Ham is a 2 year old neutered Aussie. He's 65 pounds and a handsome hunk in his big pantaloons! Tri-color, docked tail - exuberant and happy, but not overly active (though - not a mellow lie-about either!) He is a fine companion to other dogs, seems to be semi tolerant of cats if not friendly, well mannered though lacking in a lot of formal training. He would like to snuggle on the couch if he can get away with it. He is very affectionate, stubborn too - and a bit of a "Ham!"

Ham is living at the Milo Sanctuary in Willits. He is a very smart and people oriented dog, however: Occasionally, he dislikes male humans and, when he does, he can bite. He is also slightly food aggressive, so he needs to be separated for feeding and does better with female dogs. Lastly, he is reactive to fast moving objects/vehicles as many herding breeds are. He needs a savvy owner with plenty of space for him to exercise and stay out of trouble. Handsome hunk in his big pantaloons! Tri color, docked tail, exuberant and happy but not overly active. He does have herding, nip habits and is not appropriate for heavily urban lifestyles or a home with small kids. (Bicycles, skateboards etc. can be problematic, though with proper caution - not a big issue).

Ham is very friendly, loves people and was happily sharing a large run in the forest with 2 other dogs, a male and a female up at the Milo sanctuary. He seems more interested in people than in other dogs. He is very smart and keeps eye contact with me whenever I am in the run. He tries to anticipate my commands and is always eager to please. He sits promptly for me and loves his treats. Overall, a happy, friendly dog that bonds easily and would make a great single pet. He tends to be territorial and can be very protective of the person he chooses. When I give him attention he does not let the other dogs interrupt us. He needs an owner that can establish a solid relationship with him, setting precise boundaries between work, play, love time. He responds extremely well to simple routines repeated day after day. He hangs out near a desk or goes to work well. Ham walks very well on leash . . .he is a charmer.Ham does have serious herding instincts when it comes to joggers, bicyclists, skate boarders, kids on swings etc. So, he will be best suited to a more rural living situation in the country.

He is great in the house - and loves carrying around toys and tossing them in the air and catching them . . . he is a lot of dog and a lot of fun! He is a young dog, and with some training will make an excellent companion for an active person or couple who are familiar with Aussies.

Ham has some issues about being grabbed by his collar - and he does a roll over and play dead game that can be problematic - and it takes a savvy person to deal with him. He needs a firm, and smart dog handler who can observe and deal with his idiosyncrasies.

Reno
We have had Reno since he was 8-10 weeks old. Now that he's 10 months old, he's developed a bad habit of breaking out of the yard and going into the street. We live on a busy street in Lodi and we can't seem to contain him or make him stop. He gets regular exercise at the dog park and leash walks, but he insists on breaking out of the yard. We fear for his safety and would like to find him a good home. Contact Cindy at cmp04@comcast.net
